31 December 2015/1 January 2016: total 2 species 2, (Min 1.1C, Max 2.9, zero stars, calm, wet). Well, that is, as they say, a wrap. Farewell 2015, welcome 2016 and a happy and healthy New Year to one and all. Despite the near freezing conditions, a couple of moths decided to put in an appearance. What a spectacular December it has been.

The total now stands at an amazing 13 species, including a Hebrew Character some three months ahead of schedule.

27/28 December: total 6 species 6, (Min 9.1C, Max 10.7, zero stars, windy). Well, that's Christmas over for another year and if things continue to shape up as they have done so recently, then it is going to be a great mothing experience in Devon in 2016. There are at times though moments that remind me of my time in New Zealand, which the following poem sums up quite neatly. It is entitled RAIN, by an anonymous author.

It rained and rained and rained
The average fall was well maintained
And when the tracks were simply bogs
It started raining cats and dogs
After a draught of half an hour
We had a most refreshing shower
And then most curious thing of all
A gentle rain began to fall
Next day but one was fairly dry
Save for one deluge from the sky
Which wetted the party to the skin
And then at last the rain set in.

This explains why everywhere is so green!

23/24 December: total 1 species 1, (Min 8.6C, Max 9.7, zero stars, heavy rain, near gale force winds). No self respecting moth should ever have been out in these conditions! This one I found cowering inside the greenhouse.

22/23 December: total 7 species 4, (Min 5.6C, Max 9.2, hazy moon, zero stars, everywhere wet after very heavy rain, windy). Amazingly, we have already clocked up 20 species in a very short time for the garden and this in December! It was never as good as this in Sussex, although the unprecedented mild weather this autumn must have had a lot to do with things.

20/21 December: total 9 species 5, (Min 6.1C, Max 6.8, moon, no stars, breezy). Despite lower temperatures, there was, at least by my standards, a good turnout last night. I have continued my long-held strategy, first adopted when we lived in Sussex, of placing the moth trap just inside the door of my greenhouse. This has manifold benefits, not least of which is that any moths actually inside the trap find it very much harder to disappear into the stratosphere when the trap is opened in the morning. There is, to my mind, an even greater benefit, as far more moths are recorded, particularly the micro moths. There are certain times of the year when the moths appear disinclined to actually enter the trap at all and are to be found resting on the greenhouse, both inside and out. last night was a good example, as there were no moths actually in the trap.

19/20 December: total 7 species 5, (Min 8.6C, Max 11.8, moon, no stars, gale). Just as the number of moths was building up to, what is for me, an unprecedented total for a December night, we had to take time off to visit family and, of course, the moment we return the weather changes for the worse. Mind you, we have clocked up 15 species in the short time we have been here, which includes two new species for the list.

Hello, from a somewhat soggy Devon and my first moth trap in my new home in Payhembury, and not a bad night at all, with my first ever Dark Chestnut and my highest number of species for a December night. The nights remain unseasonably warm, but it really does rain a lot more here! In the meantime, the move went well and I am learning how to use my two axes, a smallish chopping axe and a larger splitting axe. Great fun!

21st and 22nd November 2015: the first frosts of the autumn have come as a nasty surprise, but this surely has to be a record - I can well remember the first frosts in the past coming in September! The countdown has started, as we are moving to Devon on 2nd December, after which I will have to rename this web site The Devon Moth Diary, or the moths of Payhembury.

20/21 November: a big fat zero! (Min 1.2C, Max 3.3, zero stars, the merest zephyr, but rain and very windy by morning). The long promised cold arctic conditions arrived with a vengeance and little wonder that no self-respecting moths put in an appearance.

14/15 November: total 1 species 1, (Min 13.2C, Max 14.0, zero stars, very windy gusting to gale force, drizzle). What an incredible turnaround - temperatures have shot up again! On the other hand, when I checkerd the trap just prior to going to bed, there was absolutely nothing at all. Everywhere was still wet after a day of rain, often heavy, and constant non-stop dreariness, it drizzled and there was a gusting wind, frequently to near gale force overnight. In other words, an absolutely foul night. As I approached the trap this morning it was with no anticipation of finding anything at all. At first, I thought a twig had blown into the trap during the night, but quickly realised that it was an insect of some sort. It simply did not look like a moth at all, that is, until I tipped it out from the underneath of an egg box and quickly realised just what it was.

I, of course, reported it to Colin Pratt, who seemed very pleased. He feels sure that it is part of a colonising wave of residents sweeping across the county from the west. It remains rare as a primary immigrant and still only occurs singly as a resident.
