I have now added in excess of a hundred new moth species to the indexes and replaced many hundreds of older images and there are now something like 1,500 images on this web site. I think my photography is slowly improving, but I still search for the best background against which to photograph moths, indeed if such a thing even exists. I have al;so been experimenting this year with getting greater depth of field, which involves taking several images and then merging them, but this is incredibly time consuming, although my initial results are quite promising, particularly with the micro moths. Perhaps I should also add that it is an immense challenge to get the small critters to stay still for long enough!

My next task this winter is to cross check all the changes to the scientific names. Just why is it that our scientists are continuoisly changing their minds about what a moth should actually be called and to which family it should belong? The new check list highlights most of the changes I need to amend and I hope to add the new numbering system to my pages when I get a moment.

Despite two more really mild nights, nothing further has been recorded and I am going to take a break from trapping until the New Year.

17/18 December: total 2, species 1, (Min 12.3C, Max 12.4, zero stars, intermittent breeze, wet). I had hoped for a December moth, considering how mild it was, but had to make do with the common or garden LBAMs. These have been recorded in more months than any other species.

We had the autumn meeting of the Sussex Moth Group last night and our chairman Dave Green scooped up a December Moth in the car park. I had a tube in my pocket so tipped it in, but the moth just would not settle and so I released it on leaving the hall at the end of the meeting. Imagine my surprise, therefore, upon returning home to find a December moth resting in my trap, co-habiting with a November moth. There were also two Dingy Dowds, a male and a female. How do I know the sexes? Well, I will leave that to your imagination! It was interesting to see so many moths on the wing driving back from the meeting.

The arrival of a Merveille du Jour always lives up to its name, for two to arrive on the same night makes it truly wondrous! The mint choc chip moth in all its glory! As for that Swallow-tailed, where on earth did that come from so late in the year? This has been a remarkable October, one of the mildest I have enjoyed in my 72 years on this planet and so many moths putting in late appearances.

14/15 October: total 3, species 3, (Min 12.2C, Max 12.8C, zero stars, slight breeze, still very wet after heavy rain). A great disappointment after a couple of weeks on Cyprus, where moth activity was counted in the high hundreds, all brought in by a 9W "black" light! As always, there were new species for me to record: French Red Underwing (only 1 UK record and that over 100 years ago on Jersey), Rosy Underwing (only 9 UK records), the incredible Crimson Speckled, the huge Convolvulus Hawkmoth and a Blair's Mocha. Then there were all those species which don't actually appear on the UK list.
