30June/1 July 2015: total 216 species 75, (Min 18.3C, Max 21.2C, zero+ stars, calm). From the moment I saw that the temperature was still hovering above 21 degrees at 22.30 I just knew that I was in for a hard time in the morning. There has been a dearth of micro moths this year, but all this changed, and with a vengeance. One of the hottest, if not the outright hottest, night for several years brought in an excellent total in excess of 200 with 75 species recorded.

29/30 June 2015: total 80, species 33, (Min 11.1C, Max 16.0C, zero stars, calm, bright moon, slight dew). Although it has yet to be accepted by our County Moth Recorder, I am pretty well convinced that I have recorded a Kent Fruit Piercer, a very rare micro moth, last recorded only about a mile away by Bob Foreman in 2009. The wings are somewhat cryptic, but there is a very distinctive chestnut cowl.

21/22 June 2015: total 40, species 25, (Min 12.3C, Max 14.8C, zero stars, mainly calm with intermittent breeze, rain by morning). There are some within the Sussex Moth Group who suggest that I am wrong to run a moth trap every night, as this disrupts breeding activity. What I find is that by running a trap every night, moth numbers build up, but the moment I go away for a day or two the number decreases quite significantly, as they migrate on their way again, before numbers start to build up again. This observation should not come as too much of a surprise really. Moths, like all insects, have one thing on their minds, as my friend and dragonfly expert Dave Chelmik is so fond of explaining, and that is to reproduce. So, it should come as no surprise that when moth numbers build up, others are attracted to that location, whether it be because of pheromones, or some other process. I also record good numbers of moths "in cop" and there is normally excellent moth activity in my garden because it is planted for wildlife, with a very considerable number of different plants, and hence varied nectar sources throughout the year. So, what I am trying to say is this; running a moth trap on as many consecutive nights as possible is likely to yield higher moth counts.

Having been called away from home perhaps more than usual this year, this trend has been quite noticeable, but there is another and far more worrying. I have yet to carry out a detailed analysis of moth activity this year, but my initial fears are that this is by far the worst year for moth activity since I started recording some 10 years ago. By this time I would expect to see considerable micro activity, but many of the common garden species here in Mid-Sussex are either only being recorded as singletons, or are absent altogether. Is it possible that the low light levels this year have been perhaps a contributory factor?

On the other hand, it was good to see a Mullein moth before we set off. All those plantings of mullein plants a couple of years back have borne fruit, so to speak, and judging by the condition of one of the plants this year, we may well get more of these terrific moths next year. Last year the plants were outstanding, with one reaching a height of about 10 feet, and another not far short of that.

There was this very interesting micro on top of the greenhouse, and as it was out of reach I tried to coax it lower using a length of bamboo. It took immediate offence and disappeared upwards at a rate of knots. Then, just as I was about to return indoors there it was again, but this time behind the greenhouse doors and the moment I opened the door off it went again. Such things happen and I was left thinking "que sera sera". This morning however, there it was again, but this time inside the trap and I potted it up in triumph; only my second record of a Common Bright Incurvaria oehlmanniella.

16/17 May 2015: total 15, species 12, (Min 6.2C, Max 11.0C, medium- stars, scant breeze). Despite a colder night, numbers have crept up a little, although all but one were recorded before I retired to my bed at about 10.45. As promised yesterday, I have made an analysis of the macro moths recorded so far this month. They total 31 species, but I would have expected to have seen 107 species by now. This May seems to be turning into another like the one experienced two years ago in 2013, which was a disaster for moth trapping.

I was banging on the other day about what a poor start to the year it has been and May in particular has been really bad. Tomorrow, I will take a look at the macro moth data and do not expect that to be much better either.

It is really incredible just how few micro moths are out and about and I simply do not understand the reason why this should be. Night time conditions are all right for the time of year and 2015 is going to go down as one of the worst micro springs for a decade or more. In fact, it has also been a dreadful spring for the macro moths as well when I think about it, at least in terms of abundance (or lack of) and diversity. As things go, it is shaping up to be another year like 2013!

There are several people I know who complain bitterly that there are so few moths inside their traps when they check in the morning and seem to assume that the moths have beaten them to it and flown the moment the sun rises. In my experience, particularly early in the year, very few moths actually enter the trap at all and can only be found by scanning the immediate vicinity and preferably before retiring to bed. For example, of the 37 moths recorded over the past two nights, only one was actually inside the trap and that was the lovely Pebble prominent, found hiding under the rim and only a mere handful were recorded after 22.30. All this is in stark contrast to my experiences on Cyprus, where there is much less light pollution and hundreds of moths end up inside the trap.

4/5 May 2015: total 11, species 8, (Min 12.4C, Max 12.7C, zero stars, calm but gusting to gale force by morning, steady light rain). The recent steady light rain on two nights has benefited the Green-winged Orchids, which have now been watered in well. The largest clump, the one which nearly did for me by giving me a heart attack, now comprises 30 orchids, which is utterly amazing. The original site from which they came contains thousands of blooms and so it is very important locally that my transplants survive. As for my chest pain, it is now far less excruciating and I am able to breath more normally, although I am still short of breath at times. Was it worth it? So long as the plants survive, of copurse it was!

3/4 May 2015: total 5, species 5, (Min 10.0C, Max 12.6C, zero stars, windy). A beautiful pristine Oak Hook-tip awaited me on the side of the greenhouse door when I evenually got up this morning. I am getting over a major scare on Saturday afternoon, when I suffered immense chest pain. Having been rushed to hospital by paramedics and having undergone all the usual tests I was told that my lungs are OK, my bloods are OK, my cholesterol is normal, my oxygen levels are just fine and my heart is OK, but this did not explain the simply terrible chest pain and a massive difficulty in breathing. Last Monday I had translocated seven large clumps of green-winged orchids from a neighbouring garden, which is about to disappear under several tons of cement. I moved about five and a half dozen of them. I simply do not know if this operation will prove to be successful, but I did dig up very large clumps, a full spade deep and these were very heavy indeed to carry the few yards to my own garden. The specialist believes that this is what may have caused my problem, which is perhaps a muscle strain, or chest tear, or somesuch. I woke up this morning late bathed in sweat, but my breathing was considerably improved. :)

1/2 May 2015: total 1, species 1, (Min 7.4C, Max 8.5C, zero stars, slight breeze). I just cannot figure out what is going on. With weather conditions good for the time of year, there was just one moth. Are we entering another period of severe decline in insect numbers, or is there another explanation?

In the meantime, my cataloguing of the Cyprus moths continues with many more UK rarities than I had anticipated, including: Gregson's Dart, Long-legged China-mark, Dark Marbled Tabby, Broad-barred White, Delicate, Gem, Heather Knot-horn, Small Blood-vein, Small Mottled Willow and Mediterranean Brocade. I still have over a dozen more moths to id, so there could be more to come.

23/24 April 2015: total 4, species 2, (Min 5.3C, Max 8.8C, medium- stars, calm). After a brilliant mothing experience in Cyprus, back again to a typical spring night at home. We bought a new Skinner trap with 125W MV light for Cyprus to replace the 25W "black" light in a home-made trap and boy did it perform! I still have many hundreds of moth images to process, but new UK rarities so far include Treble-bar, Scarce Crimson & Gold, Tawny Prominent, Olive-tree Pearl, Lunar Double-stripe and Essex Y. It was absolutely brilliant! Images will be posted in due course.
