27/28 June: total 141 species 44, (Min 11.3C, Max 15.0C , medium-- stars, scant breeze, dew). Seeing a fairly heavy dew I was not that optimistic about seeing many moths. How wrong I was! One new garden species and a plenitude of geometridae. I got a bit hung up on the Engrailed, thinking that it might have been either a Small Engrailed or a Square Spot, but our County Moth Recorder, Colin Pratt, kindly put me right.

26/27 June: total 89 species 32, (Min 13.9C, Max 16.3C , zero stars, calm, everywhere still soaking wet after rain). Another new garden species, this time a micro - Hawthorn Ermel. We seem to have been on a bit of a roll recently with new species - let us hope this trend continues :) It was a really nice surpise to find three Elephant Hawkmoths in the trap this morning, this after the Pine Hawkmoth of the previous night. I am always thrilled to see any hawkmothsd in the garden.

Much cooler conditions and seriously reduced numbers, although one new garden species - Small Engrailed. I have to admit that I have largely based my id on the image shown on the UK Moths website, this being one of those "difficult" species.

18/19 June: total 69 species 29, (Min 10.0C, Max 14.4C , zero stars, calm, dew). Having returned from a night in South London, I am left musing about habitat change and the impact this has on moth populations. Nunhead, where my daughter lives, has been an excellent location for moth trapping, but last night saw a massive decline in species and moth numbers. As the gentrification of this part of London continues apace, large, mature trees and shrubs have been cut down, leaving barren, sterile gardens and the moths simply do not like such conditions. Back here at home, it was a slightly colder night.

One moment hardly any enter the trap, the next they are all piling in, led in this instance by the noctuids. It is also remarkable how well the Heart & Club moths are doing this year - I cannot ever recall seeing them in these numbers.

12/13 June: total 88 species 46, (Min 11.6C, Max 15.9C , medium stars, calm, no moon, no dew). There should have been an almost full moon, but it was either obscured by cloud, or late in rising. Anyway, despite warmer conditions and an absolutely still night, the micro moths failed to impress. On the other hand, out of 11 eggs laid in a pot on 2 June by a Poplar Hawkmoth, two hatched out, just 9 days later. As I am already rearing a Clifden Nonpareil, I already have poplar leaves and so am encouraged to think that these may stand some chance of survival.

10/11 June: total 57 species 34, (Min 10.4C, Max 13.7C , medium- stars, slight breeze, bright near full moon, scant dew). For a second consecutive night the main flight period ocurred after I had gone to bed, when three times as many moths came to the light. Doubtless the near full moon was one of the reasons. When releasing the moths this morning, I had to change my position several times in an attempt to elude the dratted robin!

9/10 June: total 84 species 41, (Min 12.4C, Max 17.2C , zero stars, intermittent scant breeze, no moon, after heavy afternoon rain). Normally, I expect to record more moths before I go to bed, than those arriving throughout the night. Despite the seemingly ideal mothing conditions, arrivals were very slow, coming in dribs and drabs, and so it was good to see that many more arrived later on. I suspect the heavy late afternoon rain had an adverse impact, although it had stopped by the time I inspected the trap. In the meantime, the robin is becoming a complete nuisance, following me around whenever it claps eyes on me, doubtlessly associating me with a good feed of moths. I am having to take extreme measures to deter it from eating the lot!

8/9 June: total 116 species 46, (Min 13.8C, Max 16.8C , zero stars, calm, moon, very slight bround dew). During our weekly butterfly transect, there were abundant Silver Y moths - quite an influx of them and no doubt continental immigrants. There were also 2 pristine Clouded Yellow butterflies, but it is questionable if these were also immigrants, as they were in the same meadow where several were recorded last year, and which hung around for three weeks or so.

7/8 June: total 58 species 36, (Min 12.2C, Max 14.7C , medium stars, calm, dew, bright moon). With an early heavy dew it was never going to be as good a night as yesterday, but a welcome sight this morning was only my fourth Scorched Wing resting on the top of the trap. I was also rewarded with a Lime Hawkmoth - such a clatter of wings as it flew in last night. Numbers f the smallest micros were well down - they simply cannot cope well with heavy dew.

6/7 June: total 94 species 52, (Min 13.6C, Max 16.7C , medium- stars, calm, no dew, bright moon). The forecaste conditions were spot on and promised an avalanche of moths and yet in nearly 2 hours there was only a steady trickle and of the 62 moths potted up before I retired, only 1 was actually in the trap. I am frequently asked why there are relatively few moths in my friends' traps. They seem to think that a moth trap actually traps all the moths attracted to the light, overlooking the fact that they primarily attract moths and other insects to the light and these will settle on all manner of surfaces, often up to several feet away from the trap. That is the reason why I spend so much searching the area around my trap, although in my case this search is greatly helped by the siting of my trap just inside the door of my greenhouse and close to my back fence. This strategy ensures that many of the moths I may fumble with when trying to pot them up do not immediately disappear into the ether never to be seen again - a very frustrating experience that. Why do the escapees always look to be the moths never seen before!

5/6 June: total 13 species 8, (Min 7.0C, Max 10.1C , medium stars, calm, dew, bright half-moon). A second cooler night and moth numbers are in rapid decline. Our resident robin greets me every morning and follows whereever I go and it is becoming harder to dodge him when releasing the nightly catch. His excited chatter immediately he spots me is unusual. On a much brighter note, overnight temperatures are now forecaste to rise quite dramatically.

Last year, and this, I planted a couple of dozen foxgloves and so it is really nice to be able to photograph a Foxglove Pug again. Such a beautiful pug!

Just as I am about to go away for nearly two weeks (the Midlands and the Lakes) along comes the best ever May mothing night I have ever had. As a result, this list may still be subject to some minor amendments, as I try to mop up the last few photo ids. Sorry it has taken so long.... :)

18/19 May: total 53 species 23, (Min 10.6C, Max 13.7C, medium- stars, calm, no moon, very slight dew). Another excellent mothing night and the myriad of micros were still hard at it, spiralling up and down between 30 feet and so, down to a few feet above my head. Well they were, that is until the bats turned up and they all disappeared like greased lightening!

17/18 May: total 47 species 24, (Min 9.7C, Max 14.6C, almost zero stars, calm, no moon and dew late in coming down). It was almost the perfect mothing night: nearly starless, no wind, no moon and the dew did not come down until quite late, and well after the main flight period. It was an amazing sight with countless moths, mostly I suspect only recently hatched out and circling around at about 20-30 feet above my head, caught in the strong beam of my head torch. Few descended, or were attracted to the light, seemingly intent on only one thing - sex. Oh, and one other thing - there was a brand new species for the garden list, a well-marked Garden Apple Slender 0310 Callisto denticulella.

16/17 May: total 27 species 15, (Min 8.5C, Max 12.3C, medium- stars, calm, no moon, no dew). It was just one of those nights - few biggies, but several micros drifting in. I missed potting up at least six moths, my clumsiness doubtlessly increased as a result of drinking a bottle of red! I have an admission to make - I am deeply attracted to fresh, well-marked specimens of micro moths and feel a sense of loss when they manage to evade my attempts at potting them up.

21/22 April: total 25 species 7, (Min 11.0C, Max 12.9C, zero stars, calm, developing light drizzle). Then look what comes along! A much warmer night with a slight bit of moisture and out they come. I was also back on the mv light, which brought in another couple of early arrivals.

20/21 April: total 3 species 3, (Min 4.4C, Max 7.8C, medium- stars, calm, after a day of very heavy rain). More and more moths are putting in an early appearance, several breaking all previous emergence records for me here in Mid-Sussex. Another poor showing, however, possibly not helped by running the actinic for a second night.

19/20 April: total 3 species 3, (Min 7.1C, Max 8.1C, medium- stars, slight breeze). I turned on the actinic last night in deference to the family, who objected that the mv would keep them awake all night!

17/18 April: total 18 species 12, (Min 5.5C, Max 12.5C, zero stars, breezy). That's better, but the forecaste for tonight is colder again.... Several moths are emerging earlier and earlier in the year and in the case of my garden here in Mid-Sussex, Grey Pine Carpet has appeared a month ahead of schedule and even the Shuttle-shaped Dart is a week ahead. At his rate, all the text books will need to be re-written before too much longer!

14/15 and 15/16 April: total 1 species 1, (By 22:30 on 14th the temperature was falling fast and so, with just the pne moth in evidence, the light was turned off. The next night the temperature fell even further, this time to 1.3C and I did not even bother to turn the light on at all!).

12/13 April: total 5 species 5, (Min 5.7C, Max 8.4C, medium- stars, intermittent slight breeze, bright moon). The vicissitudes of mothing could not have been demonstrated better last night - the slightest variations in atmospheric conditions has such a large impact on the numbers of moths flying. On the other hand, a brand new garden species, the Lunar Marbled Brown and in excellent condition (and just look at that incredible depth of field - the result of stacking, or stitching 8 images together!).

11/12 April: total 17 species 6, (Min 5.5C, Max 9.3C, zero stars, hazy moon, calm). A welcome return of the 20-Plumes and three pristine Nut-tree Tussocks, all in pristine condition and a fortnight earlier than usual. I have also been experimenting with getting greater depth of field and am quite pleased with the results, as hopefully can be seen below. (Hint: last year the body would have been in focus, but the legs would not).

4/5 April: total 11 species 5, (Min 6.4C, Max 8.6C, medium stars, very scant breeze). A much colder night, this reflected in the sharp fall in numbers of moths. What a shame that really good mothing nights never last long.

3/4 April: total 28 species 6, (Min 10.5C, Max 11.4C, zero stars, slight breeze, merest hint of drizzle - or was it yet more sand from the Sahara :)). Well, it did not take long for that hatch of Twenty-plume moths to disperse. As an aside, having carried out my first butterfly transect of the year yesterday (Small Torts, Peacocks and Brimstones) I was struck by the fact that there has never been more Ladies Smock in evidence and yet there was not a single Orange Tip.

2/3 April: total 22 species 8, (Min 10.0C, Max 14.3C, zero stars and zero wind). A direct consquence of mixing sand from the Sahara with home-grown diesel fumes produced the warmest night of the year and a good "crop" of moths. On the other hand, the air pollution is fairly toxic....
