27/28 June: total 56, species 32 (min 12.8C, max 13.5C, zero stars, windy, drizzle). It is always a red-letter day when a hawkmoth turns up, doubly so when a Buff-tip puts in an appearance. The Moth Hotel took quite a battering last night. At first I thought it might have come on to rain harder, then I wondered if there was a Large Yellow Underwing outside, but when I glimpsed the size and colour I knew it was an elephant. You can often hear a hawkmoth approaching from quite a distance - the wings make quite a loud clattering noise, but when they bump into the glass the noise really can make you jump! Just imagine the headlines in the local newspaper: "Elephant attacks a greenhouse" :).

24/25 June: total 51, species 20 (min 9.4C, max 12.6C, medium stars, partial cloud, calm). The writing was on the wall when a bat swooped in and took a moth in flight. I immediately knew that several of the more interesting moths would not stay around to put in an appearance, as many can actually detect the bat's "sonar". Our Painted Lady butterflies have today been released. Four out of the five caterpillars pupated and hatched, of which one had a wing deformity. Still, it was a very interesting experiment.

20/21 June: total 70, species 32 (min 13.3C, max 14.7C, medium-- stars, scant breeze, heavy dew). By 23.00 I had recorded a mere 24 moths - a slow night then, despite the warm and calm conditions. Perhaps the moths disliked the heavy dew. So, I decided to switch off the twin 30W Actinics and use the MV instead. This seemed to work quite well, as many more turned up overnight. Jon Clifton has told me in the past that the Actinics often bring in more moths than the MVs and in the past this seems to have been the case here in Mid-Sussex, but on the evidence last night the jury is still out. In any case, there were far fewer geometrids - they do not like the dew.

19/20 June: total 124, species 54 (min 15.9C, max 19.8C, zero cloud, breezy, some fleeting glimpses of the moon). Phew! They simply flew in and in and in! What a mixture and what great moths, many yet again rarely recorded in the garden and one new species for the list. It got me wondering if some of the arrivals had come with the light to strong south easterly winds we have experienced over the past couple of days. Then it took hours of photography and browsing all my moth books to id what had actually come in.

An excellent night: my first Mullein Wave in Sussex, my first Satin Wave and only my fourth record of an Alder moth. There was also a cracking good male Pale Tussock.

16/17 June: total 38, species 14 (min 11.0C, max 13.2C, thick patchy cloud, calm with a bit of a moon). Excellent temperatures but perversely a poor night number wise, no doubt hindered by the presence of the moon. On the other hand, it is always a great night when a hawkmoth turns up. Our county moth recorder, Colin Pratt, kindly identified my Freyer's Pug for me.

On the other hand, the quite marked trend for some of the rarely recorded moths in the garden continues with an appearance of a Figure of Eighty, it being only my third record for this species.

7/8 June: total 29, species 18 (min 8.6C, max 11.8C, medium- stars, strong chill wind out of the north). This has been a very strange year. The extremely late spring and continuing displacement of the Jet Stream seem to have brought on unbroken chill, nightly winds out of the north. On the other hand, little recorded moths have regularly been putting in an appearance: last night only the third record of a Swallow Prominent and the sixth record of a May Highflier. The numbers are well down, even on last year, which was not a good one for moth recording.

One of the stars of the evening dinner party was Theo, my 21 month old grandson. A really great occasion, from the little I remember of it!! It makes quite a difference once the bubble glaze is removed from the moth hotel and last night brought in three cracking specimens: Iron Prominent, only the third ever Coxcomb Prominent and a fresh Nut-tree Tussock f. medionigra. The Coxcomb Prominent was almost completely overlooked, resembling a dead bit of frass clinging to the side of the greenhouse and I did not realise that it was a moth until much later in the day.

12/13 May: total 3, species 3 (min 9.5C, max 9.9C, zero stars, cold edge to the breezy conditions, fine drizzle). After last year's very wet and poor mothing spring, it was hoped that matters might improve this year. Some hopes! After our long, protracted winter and delayed spring this year, many of us hoped that with increasing night time temperatures we might see more moths. Again, some hopes!

Those of you who know me will remember that I have steadfastly set myself against moth dissection as a means of identification. I much prefer to record the moths I trap and to release them unharmed. It has always seemed perverse to me that so many micro moths looking identical to the human eye are identified by the scientists by the shape of their genitalia. As recently as the 1950s, British schoolchildren were still studying pre-World War II textbooks that divided Europeans into Germanic, Alpine and Latin types according to the shape of their noses. Maciej Henneberg, a University of Adelaide anthropologist, is quoted as declaring that scientists have been arguing for 50 years that all humans are too closely related to be divided into races and that the few externally visible differences like skin colour or nose shape are not enough to justify divisions. My point exactly! I am also reminded of the person who found two species of beetles new to the county, who felt it necessary to trap and kill them to properly identify them, ignoring the fact that the only two breeding females capable of establishing larger colonies were now extinct. Hey ho! I also well remember another person on the Ashdown Forest who scooped up an incredibly rare spider to add to a collection. Another loss of an adult breeding species. With so much wildlife in serious decline such practices are to be discouraged. I could go on, but not today.

Our first butterfly transect of the year, delayed because until now conditions were just not up to scratch, produced a mere 3 Brimstones and 2 Peacocks: there were no Orange Tips in evidence at all and indeed the Ladies Smock is only just coming into flower. Depressingly, we have now lost the first section of our transect, which is to be developed. The onward march of the barbarians continues!
