15/16 June 2011: total 63, species 26 (14.4C at 22.30 then rising by morning, total cloud, breezy, with periodic rain). I was tired last night and so skipped my usual check at 22.30. With excellent mothing conditions, the results are quite clear and seem to confirm what I already feel to be the case, viz. there are a great number of moths that simply do not enter the trap at all and are gone by morning, whether flown or eaten by birds is anyone's guess.

By 22.45 they were swarming, but things had settled down to a trickle within half an hour, so I went to bed. Until then, there had been hardly any macros at all and so it was not until the morning I discovered an exciting Poplar Hawk-moth in the trap.

9/10 June 2011: total 32, species 14 (Min 4.9C, Max 7.9C, clear with scant breeze). A cold and unpleasant night with disappointing moths on the wing. They had more sense than to use up extra energy flying around in such low temperatures!

8/9 June 2011: total 77, species 27 (Min 5.7C, Max 9.8C, clear & calm). I ran an MV light until 22.30 then reverted back to my normal set-up. The results were inconclusive, although when I checked, moths seemed to be swarming in greater numbers around the light than I am normally used to seeing. The MV light also brought in the first Plum Tortrix of the year.

7/8 June 2011: total 62, species 24 (Min 6.8C, Max 9.8C, clear & windy). A much colder night, reflected in the drop in numbers of moths. One peculiarity was a runt of a Garden Carpet, more the size of a Rivulet. There was also a late riser in the Moth Hotel in the form of an incredibly early Dun-bar, at least three weeks earlier than any has ever been recorded before.

Although warm, I really did not expect to see much with a very strong wind, but I was to be proved wrong in a spectacular way. I had collected seven dozen moths before I went to bed and the rest in the morning, including a second Rannock Looper (I know it was not the one caught the previous night, as this was sitting in a pot on the dining room table awaiting confirmation from the CMR that it was OK to release it. Apparently they are now popping up in good numbers across the county.

25/26 May 2011: total 46, species 26 (Min 9.8C, Max 11.2C, some thin cloud, calm, windy by morning, very light shower). This year is rewriting the textbooks in respect of moth flight times. It remains to be seen if this is just a one-off. In the meantime, another trend seems to be emerging - the number of moths that are much larger than normal, such as the True Lover's Knot and Light Emerald last night.

Most micros are quite dull in colour and many can only be identified by killing them and examining their genitalia. I have said it before and I will say it again. I am not into moth fiddling! When I first went out to the trap before going to bed, the moon was clear & bright and there was absolutely no moth movement. Then a fleeting, wisp of cloud crossed over the moon and the moths appeared as if from nowhere. Not many entered the trap - it is always a good idea to check the surrounding area.
