As I faced a long day in the sun and heat of the Ashdown Forest on a dragonfly survey, I tried to ignore many of the micros, as they would have taken too long to id. As it was the dragonflies performed wonderfully well, including a pristine Golden-ringed Dragonfly, which landed on my wife's trouser leg, and a great Clouded Buff Moth 2059 Diacrisia sannio, a real heathland specialist.

25/26 June 2010: total 100, species 46 (max 17.4C, min 12.1C, clear & calm). Despite the temperature holding up well there was a decline in the number of moths attracted to the light, but there were still significant numbers of micros, enough to make my life difficult trying to id over the next few days. The spiders are seemingly spinning their webs faster than I can clear them away and the bats have turned up!

24/25 June 2010: total 193, species 54 (max 17.8C, min 13.2C, hazy cloud & calm). Teach me to take a couple of days off to visit family - the weather immediately warmed up and there must have been a lot of moths about. Never mind, last night saw an absolute innundation of small moths, which have taken most of the day to id and the next few nights seem set to remain hot. As it was, I was overwhelmed with moths and took to my bed at 12.30 knowing that I would need an early start. I was not mistaken!

20/21 June 2010: total 78, species 33 (max 11.1C, min 9.8C, partial cloud & windless). Just see the difference a few degrees in temperature makes. Some real mega-stars checked into the Sussex Moth Hotel for the night, plus a few other minor celebs. 200 yards as the crow flies, on the railway embankment, this year there is an incredible display of native foxgloves and so it was good to have a Foxglove Pug visit the Moth Hotel last night.

18/19 June 2010: total 59, species 30 (max 13.3C, min 7.1C, light rain clearing by morning, chilly). Another slightly disappointing night, but typical in one respect. I have heard many people complain that too many moths appear to escape their moth traps. In my experience the majority at certain times of the year, like now, never even go anywhere near the trap. They are attracted to the light and then lurk and I spend a disproportionate amount of time every night before going to bed scooping up everything I see. At times this can take a long time. Another thing, I seem to be in a race every morning to beat a Great Tit to the trap. He, for I assume it is a he, is absolutely fearless and I practically have to throw him out of the Moth Hotel, as he is quite content to approach to within a few inches as I go about my task of collecting up the moths.

Another slow moth night start, but there were some excellent moths attracted to the moth hotel and a late riser this morning - a pristine Light Emerald. The catch of the night was a Garden Pebble, a garden first, and despite its size, surprisingly, a micro.

15/16 June 2010: total 43, species 25 (max 10.6C, min 8.5C, clear & very windy). A cold and very windy night resulted in an expected reduction in numbers, although one new garden species put in an appearance. The main problem with the moth hotel is that moths hide themselves in all the nooks and crannies and do not emerge for quite some time, generally as the greenhouse heats up. So, what was at first a slow moth night eventually turned out to be quite respectable.

29/30 May 2010: total 39, species 19 (max 12.5C, min 12.5C, light rain). As light rain set in for the night, the first of the year's Light Emeralds drifted into the Moth Hotel, via Moth Alley (the well-used gap between the greenhouse and the fence, which so many moths favour).

Of particular note on Friday, when assisting with the weekly butterfly transect at Bedelands LNR in Burgess Hill, was the sight of literally thousands of Grass Rivulet moths swarming in two of the ancient meadows, the highest number recorded for a century according to Colin Pratt, our County Moth Recorder. One of the other meadows has always contained huge numbers of Burnet Companion moths and this year we counted a small section, and as a result we estimated that the meadow contained something like 2,500 moths, the highest concentration seen in Sussex for 150 years. All I can say is this - come and count them every year at Bedelands, as this is not an ususual occurrence! Indeed, we have just taken them for granted for so long, such numbers have ceased to be unusual.

As the family returned at midnight, a White Ermiine flew into moth alley (the gap between the moth hotel and the fence). Interestingly, of the 30 moths that flew in before I went to bed, none at all settled in the trap, and each individual had to be scooped up before it flew away.

Whilst the weather remained very hot all day, it worsened in the evening, when there was a definite chill factor to the strong wind. The Lime Hawkmoth hung around until the evening, but the Great Prominent made a welcome return. I will soon post some stunning images of this moth. A Buff Tip also made an appearance; another moth with such amazing powers of camouflage.

A wonderfully hot day with lots of butterflies and day-flying moths, and all rounded off with a first of the year BBQ and a bottle, or two, of excellent red.

At last , after an abnormally long second moth winter, things seem to be kicking off again, led by a swarm of pugs savouring the heat. Experiments in moth calming measures for photographic purposes continue using CO2 and ethyl acetate. So far, the former seems to be a little unpredictable, the latter annoyingly smelly and unpleasant to use.

13/14 May 2010: total 1, species 1 (max 7.3C, min 0.5C, overcast then clearing and windless). At long last the successive ducks have been broken, not by anything near the trap, but by a day-flying moth nectaring on the rock roses in the front garden yesterday morning in a brief spell of sunshine. We have suffered the third consecutive night of white frost, but by morning the wind had veered to the south-west, at long last away from the dreadful cold northerlies we have endured for so long.

Late morning - having spoken to moth enthusiasts in East Anglia and the North-West, they are experiencing exactly the same problems and their meagre catches, where they exist at all, seem to only contain aging early Spring moths, such as Hebrew Characters. Colin Pratt, our County Moth Recorder, agrees that the weather has been horrible and he has been counting his lowest numerical levels since starting more than 40 years ago, as are other people - but feels it could all come right in the end. He says it's just the unusually (but not VERY unusual) cold weather, that's all. We will be getting late, concertina, and split emergences, but it's all a normal part of the long-term game, but we will suffer from a lower number of species being recorded due to the hang back.

Small Purple & Gold 1361 Pyrausta aurata (1)

12/13 May 2010: total 0 (max 5.8C, min 0.3C, overcast then clearing with scant breeze). Can it really be due to the relentless northerly cold winds? I can think of no other rational explanation. What I will say is that I have never encountered anything quite like this in May before. There has not even been a sniff of a moth of any kind whatsoever.

11/12 May 2010: total 0 (max 5.2C, min -0.1C, clear with breeze). And so it continues! It seems that the night temperatures are significantly lower than the average. Can this be the reason for the complete lack of moths, because early evening is still wam enough for them to fly.

10/11 May 2010: total 0 (max 7.2C, min 2.1C, clear & windless). Yet another great fat zero. This really is unprecedented. Is it the volcanic ash, or is there a deeper reason? Mind you, the average temperatures are well down on previous years.

9/10 May 2010: total 0 (max 6.8C, min 2.2C, clear and breezy). After two days away with the family at Rye Harbour, another great fat zero! What on earth is happening? This has never happened before at this time of the year. Whilst away the temperature never fell below 5.3C, and so it is not as though it has been that desperately cold, although it was close to freezing last night.

6/7 May 2010: total 0 (max 6.5C, min 4.8C, clear with scant, but very cold, breeze). Here we go again, lurching from one cold night to the next with only very brief and random respites. Last night has to be a first for the time of the year - a great fat zero!

5/6 May 2010: total 5, species 5 (max 10.5C, min 5.8C, overcast & windless). At last! A beautiful new garden species, a Scarce Prominent! What a beauty!

10/11 April 2010: total 10, species 5 (5C, partially overcast & slight breeze). Despite the reasonable conditions, a very disappointing night, particularly since the butterfly transect conducted on 10 April, in brilliant sunshine & slight breeze, yielded a record 44 butterflies, 25 of which were Peacocks busy mating and also surprisingly good numbers of Small Tortoiseshells.

1/2 April 2010: total 13, species 6 (3C, overcast, light wind, rain overnight). Yet another disappointing start to a new month! This is the beginning of a new butterfly transect recording season and the first time in the four years we have been doing this that it is too cold to undertake. The rules are quite simple: a minimum temperature of 13C or greater if there is at least 60% sunshine, or more than 17C if overcast. 13C would be nice! Sunshine would be even nicer! The only consolation last night was a pristine March Tubic (Diurnea fagella).
