25/26 March 2015: total 7, species 2, (Min 1.7C, Max 2.5C, medium- stars, calm, hazy moon, overnight rain). This is turning out to be a really disappointing March - prolonged periods of cold days and nights with both frog spawn and miniature daffodils appearing at least 5 weeks later than usual. The number of different species has been pitifully small - just roll on some warmer weather!

21/22 March 2015: total 9, species 5, (Min 2.8C, Max 5.7C, medium- stars, cold breeze). The only time I have recorded a Tawny Pinion before was in the autumn of 2010, when the same one turned up on two consecutive nights. Interestingly, I was also using my twin 30W actinic trap then, as now. Having analysed my data now in some detail, there seems to be evidence to suggest that the actinic lights attract more moths and of different species in the spring and early summer. It will be interesting to see what happens this year. I will probably revert to my 125W MV light later in the year.

I have spent a huge amount of time this winter adding the new classification numbers and have redesigned this web site to, hopefully, make things easier in navigating around it. I have also spent a massive amount of time analysing my moth database since I first started to record moths eight years ago. I have set out below the top 20 moths by total abundance and by total days trapped. I think you will find the results interesting.

12/13 March 2015: total 4, species 3, (Min 6.3C, Max 7.3C, zero stars, calm). It has been a long, cold winter and despite a few nights when the temperatures appeared to be OK, day-time ones were too low to stir up any moth activity, at least in this neck of the woods.

5/6 January 2015: total 1, species 1, (Min 8.0C, Max 8.9C, zero stars, calm, slight drizzle by morning). I had hoped for a December moth, considering how mild it was, but had to make do with a common or garden LBAM.
