31 March/1 April 2012: total 6, species 5 (Min -0.4C, Max 7.2C, zero stars later clearing, breezy). I am keeping my fingers crossed that there won't be any more hard frosts to ruin the early plum and cherry blossoms. That would spell disaster for this year's crop of fruit!

Starting slightly warmer, but ending colder, the only other difference last night was a very slight breeze, and yet just look how many more moths there were. The other thing that never fails to amaze me, even discounting several moth species which appear earlier and earlier as climate change continues to kick in, is just how many moth species put in a first appearance in exactly the same week every year, even down to the exact day.

Back again after a long absense during which time we have survived a nasty car crash on the M25, when a lorry ploughed into us from behind, spun the car a few times and left us facing four lanes of oncoming traffic! I had to push the car to the side of the motorway with traffic speeding by each side! On a brighter note, we enjoyed three weeks in India hunting down tigers, gharials and skimmers, plus many other critically endangered species. The images will soon be available on The Sussex Wildlifer web site. Having taken a small portable moth trap to India, it was hugely disappointing to discover just how cold the nights can be in January and we certainly were not expecting a week of solid smog. The only macro that turned up was a Riband Wave and several Granite Ghost dragonflies.
